Groups in Beccles, Bungay, Diss, Eye, Harleston, Halesworth and Loddon are all being asked to submit ideas that would benefit the economies of the towns and the wider Waveney Valley, with each town able to bid for a minimum of £40,000 funding to make their ideas a reality.
The ‘Market Towns Initiative’ was launched on 23 February by the Waveney Valley Local Action Group, a partnership of local entrepreneurs and professionals representing interests in farming, rural businesses, community and tourism. Representatives from each of the towns have been invited to South Norfolk District Council today where the initiative and bidding process will be explained.
They will then have until the end of June to submit proposals for ‘round one’ grants under £50,000 – with a further round running later in the year – and until December to submit bids for grants of more than £50,000.

Although each town is invited to decide what measures would benefit their local economy the most, it is intended that any bids should include ideas that: a) Support basic services for the economy and rural population b) Encourage tourism activities and c) Prioritise conservation and upgrading of rural heritage.

In February last year, the Waveney Valley Local Action Group received £3.3 million as part of a successful bid for European funding by the Rural Enterprise Hub at Easton College and Norfolk County Council. There are a number of projects currently progressing through the application process; creating new micro-enterprises and supporting farmers to diversify out of agriculture, but this new initiative is aimed specifically at Market Towns.

You can use the toilet before starting the walk at 10.00am. The February walk at Needham, the only dry, sunny slot during a very wet week, was so good with excellent scenery and views of two barn owls hunting and ending with a good value lunch. Yes there were sixteen stiles to cross and lots of mud but you were warned! It may be difficult to match the quality of that walk, but some are already planning to do it again in the summer. Our March walk is unlikely to be in the same class as that at Needham but there will be plenty to see and enjoy. We begin by walking through the village of Cotton before heading out of the valley via Willow Lane and an attractive tree lined path before reaching Dandy Corner. Heading north along the valley again we follow woodland, marshland, water meadows and field edges before reaching a bridleway which crosses the main railway line as we head into the village of Finningham. Attractive houses, a path to St. Bartholomews Church, a short break and we are heading out of the village. Turning south we pass Top Croft Farm before taking Finningham Lane which leads us into and through the village of Bacton. Re-crossing the railway we are soon back to Cotton and our lunch at the pub by 1.00pm.

The walk is about 6 miles. A variety of scenery linked by paths and lanes. Stout footwear as it is still likely to be very muddy underfoot. We book our food on the day but I would still like to know if you are walking so let me know by Sunday March 14th.

Travel directions:

Take the A140 at Scole in a southwards, Ipswich direction. After about 5 miles, turn right at the crossroads signed Finningham at the White Horse pub. Through Thornham Magna and Wickham Skeith to Finningham. Turn left onto the B1113 in the village at the crossroads with a pub opposite. Go past the water tower and cross the railway bridge. Take the next turn left signed Cotton. Down the slope, turn right and the pub is on the right. Park at the far end of the park.

Map of the Roure:

A number of you have maps to follow the route. The map on this walk sheet is like all the others, not easy to follow although I give you a number of points to identify on the map in the hope that you can locate the route. For a change this month I will mark the route on the sheet which should help considerably.

Next Walk

Wednesday April 21st at Saxtead near Framlingham
